The purpose behind developing food guide was to help people make good and balanced choices. Food guide pyramid can help you combine the right foods to give your body the nutrition it requires. Here is how you can combine foods for optimal nutrition.

How to create a food group log? First of all you need to create a table with five columns titled meal, dairy, meats, fruit/vegetable and grains. Now you are required to create five descending rows named breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner and total serving. Write numbers 3, 2, 5 and 6 in the last row named Total Servings. The numbers you wrote in Total Serving are the total servings you need to have in each of the categories above. Here it is important to mention that the number of serving may vary depending upon the factors like age, gender, metabolic rate and activity level. In simple words a 10-year old boy and a 60-old man will have different serving requirements.
 

What did you eat yesterday? Think of it and start filling in the blanks in the table. You may discover that your intake of one category was more than recommended. This is how you will use the information to make your daily food plan. You should also know that a serving is not necessarily what you eat in a single sitting.
 

Now you need to create a daily eating plan. You have met your meat requirements for the day, if you have eggs and bacon for breakfast. You can take a cheese sandwich, apple and banana in lunch. For dinner you can have vegetable soup, salad, a roll and a glass of milk. If you need the recipe of healthy desert, what about sliced fresh fruit with yogurt.
 

You can always create new combinations. So be creative and keep making new combinations.
