Step by Step Guide
1- As stated earlier the food business is progressing rapidly and in major food companies there are separate departments responsible for creating their nutrition labels. You must be available the nutrition information for the particular food like the serving size, the nutrient information and %DV for each nutrient.
2- Open Microsoft Excel and merge the cells in rows 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 14 and 15 inside the box. Now make a medium thick border on row 5 and a thick bottom border on row 3 and 15. And for the rest of the rows make average line bottom. Font size of row 1 should be 13 and the font size of 4, 6 and 18 is to be set to 6. The font size of the rest of the rows is to be set to 8.
3- Now start entering the text and proper nutrient values. Remember the font types and sizes for food labels are clearly defined by the Federal Department of Agriculture.
4- Delete the rows 8, 9, 10, 13 and 17. Set the font size of row 16 to 6 pt and then enter “Not a significant source of…….” and list the items for the rows you removed. Remember, in order to use this format, at least 8 nutrients in the Nutrition Facts box must have values of zero.
5- There are many programs/software available if you want advanced creations of nutrition facts labels. Nutrition Facts software programs for small businesses are also available.
You just have to follow the food labeling regulations predefined by FDA because these templates are not available through any government website. If you find any Nutrition Facts templates make sure that they are approved by FDA.
