How to Read Nutrition Facts Labels

Want to know how to read labels? It may take some time but the knowledge you get will help you make right choices. There is a lot of information you can find if you know how to read nutrition facts labels. For instance you will know how much of a certain food to eat. Nutrition labels tell us a lot about the ingredients of that food.

Serving Sizes

The information you find at the top of a nutrition label is the serving information. It includes the amount of food in a single serving and the number of servings in the total packages. The serving information can be very helpful especially for those who are not sure about how much of a particular food they should eat. Majority of the labels we see, provide serving sizes in general amounts. But using the digital scales can help you in this regard.

Nutrient Breakdowns

The information you get from nutrition facts label is of great importance. You know about the amount of calories, carbohydrates, protein, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, sugar and fat in the single serving of food you are having. You can only plan a balanced diet when you know these amounts. Generally it is said that fifty percent of your calories should come from carbohydrates, fifteen percent from protein and the remaining percentage from fat. The amount of fat is comparatively low in healthiest foods.

Percentage Measures

“%DV” stands for the percentage of the daily value. Percentage of daily value or %DV can be used to tell if the amount of any nutrient is low. When we say low nutrient amount it means nutrient amount of 5% or less. A normal man needs two thousand calories a day. Here it is very important to know that the daily value percentages you find on nutrition labels are based on a diet of two thousand calories. Remember the daily diet (of two thousand calories) may vary depending upon the factors like age, sex and physical activity level.

Label Downfalls

You also need to know that nutrition labels are sometimes seriously misleading. For instance the labels don’t tell the type of sugar in a food. You must know if it is natural or added sugar. But it looks like that the Food and Drug Administration has realized it and in future it wants labels to state the amount of added sugar in a serving. Ingredients list is one of the important parts of food’s label it tells what actually the product contains. So have a look at the list of ingredients if you really want to know what is inside the package.
